For my first two years of vet school, I lived in an apartment complex near the medical schools at MSU. This complex was chock full of people from everywhere: my neighbor was from Puerto Rico, the girl that lived downstairs was from Saudi Arabia, and there was a legit cowboy from Texas, Stetson and all, at the end of the hall. There was also a Korean couple that chose to live in the apartment at the top of the stairs, with their door facing the entrance to the third floor. This couple was young, quiet, and very nice--- the kind of people who hold the door for you while you're trying to lug in 18 bags of groceries instead of making two trips. Well, on the morning of December 27, back from our holiday adventure, Henry decided he was going to add some excitement to their morning...
Seeing as when Henry was a (very young) puppy he would never think of leaving my side, I didn't always leash him to go outside and go potty. We'd walk outside, I'd step into the snow, and he'd follow. After a quick squat, we'd return to the front door, and back up the stairs. Furthermore, seeing as I spent more time worried about studying than making myself look awesome, I'd occasionally go out with my hair up, in a bathrobe, PJams and Ugg's.
At 12 weeks old, ill-timing and a bravery-growth spurt meant Henry was flying up the stairs in front of me as the quiet Korean couple came walking out of their door. My 43lb, 12 week old puppy went flying in, bowling over the young man, leaping onto their couch and running around their living room in a game of "catch me if you can." I chased behind in my bathrobe and Ugg's. The couple looked on, horrified.
By the time I caught my rude little man, the young girl was clinging to the wall, and the man had jumped on a chair. I exited awkwardly, spewing apologies, pretending I didn't just spent the last 3 minutes calling my deaf dog's name like he could hear me. Henry wasn't sure what he had done wrong...
About three months later, I saw the couple leaving their apartment again. Their new exit strategy involved opening the door with the chain lock in place, just to make sure a big white terror of a puppy wasn't planning a visit.
